2018 China Conference on Geography held in Xi'an



On August 29 and 30, the 2018 China Conference on Geography was held in Xi’an, China. More than 4000 geographers participated in the conference, which was  themed “Development of Chinese Geography in the New Era” and co-hosted by the Geographical Society of China and Shaanxi Normal University.

Mr. Fu Bojie, academician of Chinese Academy of Science, director-general of the Geographical Society of China and vice chairman of International Geographical Union, Shaanxi Association for Science and Technology standing vice chairman Sun Ke, Shaanxi Normal University president You Xuqun, nine Chinese and foreign academicians and many famous experts and scholars attended the opening ceremony held at Qujiang International Convention Center on August 29, which was presided over by Mr. Dong Zhibao, director-general of Shaanxi Geographical Society and dean of SNNU’s School of Geography and Tourism.


You Xuqun welcomed the participants, complimented GSC for its contribution to meeting China’s needs and solving issues of ecological, environmental protection and water and land resources utilization, overall urban-rural development and coordinated regional development under the background of global changes, and hoped this meeting would help them achieve more.


Sun Ke said the experts and scholars of this conference were invited to give advice and suggestions on the geographic, ecological, environmental affairs and regional development, which in turn would provide new stimulus and momentum for research and innovation in Shaanxi province. He also promised SAST would provide platform and service for geographers like always.

Fu Bojie said Chinese geography was in an important and favorable period of development, and hoped the participants would work together to promote its steady healthy development, expand its international influence and elevate its role in the decision-making in China’s economic development.

Mr. Michael Meadows, former secretary-general of International Geographical Union and academician of Royal Society of South Africa, briefed about IGU and complimented GSC for its achievement in international geographical research.

Academicians Fu Bojie, Wu Zhiqiang, Sun Jiulin, Zhou Chenghu, Xia Jun, Shao Ming’an, Cui Peng, Prof. Guan Meibao, Fang Xiaomin, Dong Zhibao, Liu Yansui presented at the conference, speaking on topics from big-data driven geographic research, ecological and green development and disaster management, sustainable urban development, to planetary sand science and rural geographic engineering.

According to GSC vice director-general and executive secretary-general Mr. Zhang Guoyou, this China Conference on Geography was renamed from the GSC Annual Academic Conference, which was the biggest one with the most numerous participants in its history. With 57 parallel sessions and three international exchange sessions, more social service elements and a S&T consultation forum, it served as an attempt to promote innovation and assist the development of Belt and Road Initiative and a community of shared future for mankind.
