Alumnus Liu Yansui elected TWAS academician



On November 27, Mr. Liu Yansui, a researcher of the Chinese Academy of Science’s Institute of Geographic Science and Resources and an alumnus of Shaanxi Normal University, was elected an academician of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), at the organization’s 28thconference held in Trieste, Italy.

Liu was elected in the category of sociology and economy for his outstanding achievement and contribution in the research of rural Revitalization and development innovation through rural land use and targeted poverty alleviation strategies.

Liu is director of CAS's Center for Targeted Poverty Alleviation Assessment, director of its Institute of Geographic Science and Resources’Center for Regional Agriculture and Rural Development, vice director of its Key Lab of Regional Sustainable Development Analysis and Simulation, and special appointment Changjiang Scholar.

Liu graduated from SNNU’s Department of Geography in 1989 and earned his master’s degree in Regional Geography in 1995. His research areas are the theory, technology and application of human and economic geography.

During the conference, he was awarded the TWAS 2018 Prize in Social Sciences and delivered a speech titled China’s Land Policy and The Rural Revitalization Strategy.

Forty six new academicians were elected at this 2018 conference, and fourteen of them were from China.

The World Academy of Sciences, formerly the Third World Academy of Sciences, is a non-governmental, non-political and non-profit international science organization dedicated to supporting and promoting scientific research in developing countries. 1221 scientists from 104 countries and regions are elected TWAS academicians.
