Fu Bojie awarded European Geosciences Union’s Humboldt Medal



On October 22, academician Fu Bojie, a class of 1981 alumnus of Shaanxi Normal University and also its outstanding alumnus, was awarded the 2020 Alexander von Humboldt Medal by the European Geosciences Union.

Named after the German naturalist and explorer who was the co-founder of modern geoscience, the medal is awarded to scientists who have conducted research that benefits developing countries and regions and made outstanding contributions in geoscience, planetary or space sciences.

Fu Bojie was commended for his contribution in the research of land use structure and ecological process, ecosystem service and ecological restoration of loess plateau, and achievement in spearheading global research in arid ecosystem.

Fu is the second Chinese national to be awarded the medal, after academician Liu Dongsheng, among the 11 recipients since 2006.

Fu is a researcher at the Center for Ecological Environment at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, director of CAS’s Department of Geography, vice chairman of International Geographical Union, and vice director of China’s National Committee of Ecological Protection and Construction. He was elected a CAS academician in 2011, academician of The Third World Academy of Sciences in 2012, foreign academician of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2015, and foreign academician of American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2019.

His research area is landscape ecology and natural geography, and he has published more than 10 books and 500 papers, including more than 300 SCI papers in journals such as Nature, Science, Nature geoscience, and Nature climate change, being cited over 40,000 times. He has won multiple awards, including the second award in China National Natural Science, second award in China’s Sci-tech Advancement, CAS’s Award for Outstanding Sci-tech Achievement, HLHL Award for Sci-tech Advancement, and International Association for Landscape Ecology Award for Outstanding Contribution.
