Western Normal University Alliance for Innovation and Development in Teacher Education founded



On December 5, the Western Normal University Alliance for Innovation and Development in Teacher Education was founded at a meeting held at Shaanxi Normal University in Xian, China and the Declaration to Revitalize Teacher Education in Western China was released at the conference.

More than eighty delegates from educational administration departments of thirteen provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, and eighteen normal universities of Southwest University, Inner Mongolia Normal University, Henan Normal University, Guangxi Normal University, Hainan Normal University, Chongqing Normal University, Sichuan Normal University, Guizhou Normal University, Yunnan Normal University, Tibet Minzu University, Northwest Normal University, Qinghai Normal University, Xinjiang Normal University, Yili Normal University, Ningxia Normal University, Tianshui Normal University, Hunan No. 1 Normal University, and Shaanxi Normal University attended the conference.

Shaanxi provincial vice governor Fang Guanghua congratulated on the founding of the alliance. He briefed about the new development and achievements of education in general and in teaching team development in Shaanxi province. He hoped the alliance would explore new paths of teacher education modernization, establish efficient working mechanism, implement reform in educational evaluation, improve teacher training quality, so as to churn out high quality professional innovative teachers to sustain high quality development of basic education in western China.

Ren Youqun, director of Ministry of Education’s Teachers’ Work Division, praised the achievements made by normal universities in western China and their contributions to China’s basic education. He called on the alliance to be a good think tank of and serve the needs of China’s teacher education. He urged the alliance to pull together and share their resources, build duplicable and demonstrable experience, in an effort to elevate the overall level of teacher education in western China, in support to poverty alleviation and rural revitalization.

CPC SNNU Committee secretary Li Zhongjun said that the establishment of the alliance was an important measure in implementing Chinese president Xi Jinping’s discourse on education and instruction on poverty alleviation, as well as implementing the requirements of National Educational Conference and CPC MOE Committee in elevating the construction of teaching team in western China. He said that the alliance would promote the concerted innovation and development of teacher education in western China, the overall educational strength of western normal universities and their abilities to serve basic education, which in turn would bring about more contribution to boost educational modernization, build a education-strong China, and run an education to people’s needs.

SNNU president You Xuqun said that the alliance was an answer to the need of supporting high quality development of basic education in western China. He vowed that the alliance would explore the characteristics of the construction of normal universities in a new era and the innovation and development rules in teacher education, share resources, complement each other’s advantages, make concerted progress and innovation, and contribute their wisdom and strength to the innovation and development of teacher education in western China.

Northwest Normal University president Liu Zhongkui and Yunnan Normal University president Jiang Yongwen spoke on behalf of the member universities, vowing for active participation and due contribution.

SNNU vice president and secretary-general of the alliance Dang Huaixing announced the Declaration, which delineates the responsibilities, major tasks, and steps to take of the alliance in revitalization of western teacher education.

Fang Guanghua, Ren Youqun and representatives of 18 normal universities pressed the alliance logo and university names on the big screen to inaugurate the alliance.

In the session Face to Face: Dialog Between Education Department Directors and Normal University Presidents followed the founding ceremony, the directors and presidents discussed issues and difficulties, explored reform measures, shared experiences, and offered suggestions in revitalizing western teacher education.

In the afternoon, the guests and delegates visited SNNU Museum of Education (also a Base for Cultivation of Teacher’s Ethics) and SNNU History Museum, and observed the online live streaming of the Third Shaanxi Provincial Higher Institution Classroom Teaching Innovation Contest held at SNNU.

In the evening of December 4, the council of the alliance convened its first meeting, and the charter of the alliance, members of the first council, and the Declaration to Revitalize Teacher Education in Western China were approved at the meeting.
