Prof. Muscolino of Oxford University appointed adjunct professor

        On March 2, Shaanxi Normal University appointed Prof. Micah S. Muscolino of Oxford University as its adjunct  professor at a ceremony held in the Chongyu Building on Yanta campus.

        SNNU vice president You Xuqun, High-level Talents Office director Wu Jinfeng, vice director Wang Shejiao and Prof. Fang Lan of Northwest Institute of Historical Environment and Socio-Economic Development, cooperative research team members Prof. Hou Yongjian and associate professor Pan Wei, scholars from Harvard University, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing University, Yunnan University joined NIHESED teachers and students at the ceremony.

        At the ceremony presided over Wang Shejiao, Fang Lan gave a brief introduction about Prof. Muscolino, before Wu Jinfeng read the university's decision of appointment, which were followed by talks by Prof. Hou Yongjian and Prof. Muscolino.

        Vice-president YouXuqun awarded the letter of appointment to Prof. Muscolino and congratulated him. He said he hoped that Prof. Muscolino would help develop NIHESED's historical geography discipline and enhance the university's  level of international talents. He stressed the importance of improving the level of international participation of philosophy and social science research, called for an elevated research level and international influence, and looked forward to NIHESED's positive contributions in policy consulting research and internationalization.

        Prof. Micah S. Muscolino received the bachelor degree in history at University of California, Berkeley in 1999 and the doctoral degree in Chinese history from Harvard University in 2006. He was visiting scholar in the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University, associate professor in Georgetown University, visiting professor in Harvard University, and associate professor in Oxford University. As an active young scholar in the field of environmental history, he is working in Merton College, Oxford as a professor of eastern Asian history now, and his research focus is environmental history in modern China. He has published nearly 30 papers and reviews in journals such as Environment and History and The Journal of Asian Studies. His books Fishing Wars and Environmental Change in Late Imperial and Modern China was published in 2009 by Harvard University Asia Center and Harvard University Press and The Ecology of War in China: Henan Province, the Yellow River, and Beyond was published in 2015 by Cambridge University Press.

        Prof. Muscolino was a visiting scholar at NIHESED from April to July in 2010. During his current three-year appointment, his main task is to lead the building of NIHESED's research team in environmental history of Loess Plateau, give lectures to NIHESED graduates, and facilitate NIHESED's exchange with Oxford University in academic research, faculty development and talent cultivation.
