Profile of the Lecturer:

Professor William Baker has authored, co-authored or edited over thirty volumes. He edits George Eliot – George Henry Lewes Studies, is book review editor and consultant for Style and co-edits The Year’s Work in English Studies published by Oxford University Press for the English Association who accorded him an honorary Fellowship. Currently Distinguished University Professor Emeritus at Northern Illinois University, he was honored as a Board of Trustees professor for teaching, service and research and awarded a Distinguished Research professorship. The author of over two hundred refereed articles, reviewer for the Times Literary Supplement, he is working on a two volume A Reference and Critical Guide to Anglo-Jewish Writing. He has lectured internationally and in China at various universities including Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, where he was visiting Professor, and received outstanding teaching evaluations.

Victorian Literary Cultures: Studies in Textual Subversion, edited Kenneth Womack and James Decker [Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, 2016], is a tribute by colleagues and students to Baker’s impact on them and contributions to Literary Studies that includes work on Jane Austen, Wilkie Collins, George Eliot, Harold Pinter, Tom Stoppard, and William Shakespeare.
