About the Lecture:

The psychosocial impact of cancer is well documented. The prevailing view is that the diagnosis and treatment of cancer disrupts patients’ lives, leading to psychological distress. Several studies have suggested that usually, but not always this adjustment impact resolves within the first year following diagnosis. However, new evidence reveals a different picture of adaptation to cancer and the individual differences that affect how patients respond over time to the diagnosis of cancer. This presentation will review recent work on different patterns of psychological distress among cancer patients. Predictors of distinct distress trajectories are described, with specific emphasis on the roles of consultation, personality, and clinical/treatment-related factors in differentiating distress trajectories. Finally, implications for improving the psychosocial care of cancer patients will be described.
